With the recent launch of a new AI algorithm, flagging and triaging cervical spine fractures, we look back at the story of Everlight and Aidoc

Everlight Radiology has long been at the forefront of innovation in radiology, and one of the areas in which we were a pioneer was in the establishment of  a partnership with Aidoc in 2019.

Everlight first began to investigate the use of AI in radiology workflows in 2017, when we established the Artificial Intelligence Advisory Board to investigate the possibility of using AI in the field of teleradiology. Led by internal and external experts, we recruited a radiologist consultant and AI expert named Hugh Harvey, who led our investigation into who the vendors were in our space. After extensive research, we opted for an enterprise-grade partner in Aidoc, whose robustly-trained AI solutions and aiOS orchestration and scalability tool impressed Everlight.

The testing phase

Before we launched any of the AI into the workflows, an external academic consultant undertook a rigorous statistical testing campaign, comparing patterns of historical Everlight Radiology readings against CT findings returned by the Aidoc algorithms. This research proved that acute intracerebral haemorrhage was reported more consistently by radiologists when a positive finding had been alerted by Aidoc.

After the extensive testing campaign, we bought the tested algorithms into the workflows, which have now supported our radiologists across thousands of scans.

Bringing AI into the radiology workflows

Aidoc offers a service that makes use of sophisticated ‘sentiment analysis’. During this process, when Aidoc spots that a study which is suspected for a positive triage AI finding was not engaged by the radiologist, the Aidoc service sends an email alert to Everlight Radiology operations - to verify the system operates as intended. This has proved to be extremely powerful functionality - giving great benefits in areas such as the prompting of trauma review.

Ongoing releases of new algorithms are also subject to close validation and Aidoc has been a great help in retrospectively reading old studies. This specific type of testing and the quality of its output show once more the strength of the AI algorithms.

Our continuing partnership

With the introduction of a new AI algorithm into the workflow, designed to flag and triage suspected positive cases of cervical spine fractures for the radiologist, we now leverage four of AIDOC’s cutting-edge AI algorithms, which have been meticulously developed and trained on vast amounts of medical imaging data. These algorithms assist our radiologists in more quickly and qualitatively reporting positive cases of acute medical conditions and optimising workflow efficiency. There are two more to come later this year. Long may the partnership continue.

AI-Enhanced workflows:

  • Intracranial Haemorrhage
  • Pulmonary Embolism
  • Incidental Pulmonary Embolism
  • Cervical spine fracture detection
