At Everlight Radiology, we recently conducted a survey of over 700 radiologists from 50 countries to gain insights into the critical pressures facing the field of radiology. The results, published in our report Radiology Unlocked: The Global Radiologist Report 2025, paint a stark picture of the challenges radiologists face, but also highlight promising opportunities.
Burnout, workforce shortages, and night shifts: a perfect storm
One of the most concerning findings is the prevalence of burnout and stress among radiologists. Over half of the respondents identified burnout as their top concern. This is likely due in part to workforce shortages and the long hours radiologists are often forced to work. A staggering 88% of radiologists reported working night shifts at some point in their careers, and over a third are still required to do so regularly. Nearly half of the radiologists surveyed believe that night shifts negatively impact diagnostic accuracy, and an even greater number (63%) say they have a negative impact on their well-being.
Teleradiology as a solution
In light of these challenges, it's no surprise that teleradiology has emerged as a critical support system in modern healthcare. An overwhelming 98% of radiologists recognize the benefits of teleradiology, with nearly three-quarters citing its ability to help reduce workload pressures and clear backlogs.
The rise of AI in radiology
Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionize radiology, but its adoption is still in its early stages. While only a minority of respondents currently use AI routinely, the majority see it as a valuable tool that can support, not replace, human expertise. The key to successful AI integration is responsible implementation and continuous testing to ensure AI is used to augment, not replace, radiologists' expertise.
The path forward
The findings of our research underscore the urgent need to invest in the radiology workforce. This means creating a better work-life balance to reduce burnout, minimizing night shifts, and promoting the adoption of teleradiology and AI tools that can lighten radiologists' workloads.
