Whilst the use of cardiac CT has been increasing in the investigation of chest pain, it is important to recognise that many cardiac pathologies may be diagnosed on non-dedicated CT examinations. These range from critical findings such as cardiac rupture to findings that will impact on the long-term management of patients, such as coronary artery disease.

It is important that the reporting radiologist is familiar with common cardiac pathologies; has a robust method to assess heart; and can communicate findings effectively with the cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons.

This talk will outline and demonstrate some of the important cardiac findings that can present to the emergency department as well as provide a methodology for assessing the heart that can utilised by any emergency radiologist.

---------------------------------------
Learning Objectives:

1. Familiarity with acute pathologies of the heart, pericardium and thoracic aorta that may present to the emergency department.
2. Important incidental findings and their differentials.
3. The principles of cardiac gating and ‘double’ and ‘triple’ rule out studies.
4. Basic coronary anatomy and the 17 segment model.
